Mining Development2
RMLM is home to some of the richest chromite deposits in the North West Province, positioning mining as a key sector in the municipality’s economic base. Mining activities not only stimulate regional employment but also attract investment and infrastructure development.
Key Mining Projects and Activities:
- Witkop Fluorspar Mine – has been beneficiating the dolomite mine dumps and mining the existing quarry for dolomite for the agricultural and industrial markets. The fluorspar containing aggregates are sold as a unique product into the industrial and construction markets.
- Zeerust Chrome Mine – A major employer in the region, focused on chrome extraction and beneficiation
- Marico Chrome Mine – Strategically located and expanding operations to contribute to local economic inclusion
- Meerust Mine – Under development, with chrome and associated minerals identified
- Manganese Mining Ventures – Small-scale manganese extraction supported by LED guidance for formalisation
- Small-Scale Mining Support – The LED Office actively supports artisanal miners through compliance workshops, cooperative establishment, and access to information
Renewable Energy Integration:
The Zeerust Solar Plant, although not a mining operation, forms part of the energy ecosystem supporting industrial and future-ready infrastructure development in the region. Its role in powering mining-adjacent areas, reducing grid pressure, and promoting sustainability is increasingly vital for LED integration.
